“The ‘Art’ of Critique, or how to avoid using four letter words in discussing your friends’ artwork”.
Does jurying or conversations with your peers about your work or theirs make you frustrated, disappointed, or leave you feeling a glow of success? What is this process we engage in through the formal or informal jurying process or painting discussion with peers all about? Does it help you grow or make you want to put your work in a dark corner somewhere?
I often paint with friends, and welcome the conversations about our work. Sometimes it makes me grin at the different ‘take’ someone might have on painting. Words such as like, love, nice (I call them the dreaded “four letter words”) are often offered up. Discussing work without hurting another’s feelings or letting our own bias get in the way is not easy.
We can’t abandon the conversation, but we can try to make our comments more meaningful, sharpen our language and observation skills without being harsh and critical. Reference the article on the website “The Painters Keys” on 12/12/14 entitled ” The Feedback Loop” for an interesting discussion on this very topic. Hope you can join the salon discussion. Please fee free to bring some of your work, finished or in progress, to discuss.
