Feb 4, 2016–The work of Rhode Island artist Reed McLaren received the Juror’s Award today at the OPPOSITES exhibit at The VETS Gallery in Providence. Juror Dominic Molon cited McLaren’s entry, “Highboard Diving Diptych,” as evocative and noted that it demonstrates “extraordinarily high aesthetic standards.” Molon is the Richard Brown Baker Curator of Contemporary Art at the RISD Museum. McLaren’s work is one among the final forty that Molon selected for the exhibit, which was open to submissions by New England artists. More than 140 works were submitted.
Describing the winning work on the website reedmclaren.com, the artist explains how she references archival film footage to create original works in mixed media. McLaren says, “Through the selection of multiple frames I am able to work in serial and show movement. Working from this old footage is exhilarating. I love that these scenes, some of which border on absurd, capture moments in history, and I delight in giving them a second life.”
OPPOSITES is sponsored by Art League Rhode Island and runs at The VETS Gallery through March 19, 2016.
