Art League RI is pleased to present the Elected Artist Members Exhibition, Fragments, featuring Sharon Cutts, Cynthia DiDonato, Eran Fraenkel, Victoria Guerina, Joanne Weis, R. Douglass Rice. The artists in this exhibition employ a variety of techniques, including sewing, cutting, stapling, and embedding with mixed media, collage, and canvas. Through their different mediums, they break and recreate, reform fragments, and pull together fragments to create an interwoven story.
In Sharon Cutts’ series of portraits, pieces of painted canvas are cut and collaged to create a mosaic-like structural painting. The vibrant colors and diverse elements of the canvas generate a passionate tension and lend a three-dimensional quality to her work. Her approach infuses her mixed-media collaged paintings with layered energy.
Cynthia DiDonato’s digital prints delve into interplanetary connections and often resemble digital weavings. Her series, titled “Planetary Twists,” reflects her view on how unseen forces, such as gravitational pulls, influence our lives, creating a “twist” between the personal and the universal.
Eran Fraenkel’s acrylic and ink on paper works showcase thin lines, specks of paint, skewed grids, and other patterns forming organic layered shapes. His art conveys a long-standing fascination with Islamic arts and Arabic calligraphy, particularly their geometric designs and color interplay. Some of his compositions resemble cosmic zygotes that hint at the potential to grow into various forms.
Victoria Guerina’s abstract cast paper and mixed media reliefs and sculpture cultivate a psychological space through form, texture, and materials. The white textured palette of the paper pulp is woven with string, makes pockets for foil, and has abruptions in the surface that tell a story of time and process. Some forms appear as casts of things of the past.
R. Douglass Rice compositions include bold colors and shapes with pasting and cutting in his paper collages. The playful movement and intricate arrangements within his work create a vibrant and lyrical atmosphere.
Joanne Weis’ mixed-media pieces address intense political events in U.S. history. Her works, which incorporate scarred surfaces, burned textiles, torn paper, and distressed materials, explore themes of voting, democracy, violence, discrimination, and civil rights.
